Base Jumper Almost Loses Fingers Zip Lining Down A Rusty Cable

When we see an epic stunt, we mostly see the stunt itself and not the set up. But sometimes the setup is more epic than the stunt itself, as we see here.

When Russian BASE jumper Sergey Utyugov attempted to jump at a point between two mountains in Nagorno-Karaback, a landlocked region in the South Caucasus recognized as part of Azerbaijan, his journey towards his jump off point didn’t go as smoothly as planned.

The only way to reach the point was a rusty metal cable strung across two mountains overlooking a valley. So they thought of slowly traversing the cable to reach the middle point. They rigged a crude harness with a wooden plank serving as a chair to the cable and slowly worked their way toward the point.

As he continued on, Sergey‘s glove kept getting caught between the cable and the carabiner, so he decided to just take it off. But seeing as the cable was higher on one side than the other, they quickly gained speed on the descent. Soon the controlled traverse quickly became a high-speed zip line.

Unable to slow down, Sergey was forced to grip the rusty cable with his bare hands just to regain control of his descent, shredding the skin and flesh off his hands. Finally reaching the middle point, he then let go of the smoking cable, hands and carabiner all bloody. But seeing as he went through all this trouble, Sergey still went on with the jump.
