Millions of shade balls protecting Los Angeles Reservoir

Los Angeles imports 90% of its water and evaporation is a constant enemy. In 2013 and 2014 the city lost 63 trillion gallons while in transit. The recent drought has stretched on for over four years and is the worst in modern history, but not the only one. The 1976-1977 period was dryer than the recent spate but it is worse now. With more people comes more drain on resources.

To combat the extreme California drought, the creative juices of the creative people of Los Angeles rose to the top. The drought had hit every aspect of usage. Everyone needed to conserve water.

Green lawns turned to river rock and cactus, residents went to every-other-day showers, and city leaders spent sleepless nights on solutions to the shrinking levels in reservoirs. Not only was the source of the city’s drinking water challenged by evaporation but the heat threatened a chemical reaction causing carcinogenic tainting.

The solution came by way of a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power engineer. He’d seen these balls floating in ponds near the airport. Turns out the drainage ditches were necessary for airport safety but the birds that flocked to the open water, weren’t. So the airport covered the ponds with black plastic shade balls and voila problem solved.

When adapted for the utility’s use the plastic balls became shade balls. The balls are indeed a safe plastic, polyethylene, and filled with potable water for ballast, so are friendly to the environment. The balls float together to form a complete cover that protected the surface of the water from wind and cut UV rays and thus heat.

The amount that had been lost to evaporation went down by 80-90%. Algae growth declined so the water didn’t need to be treated as much. This creative, low technology solution had saved about 300 million gallons of water and $240 million in lower treatment costs.

The chicken that lived for 18 months without a head

Mike the Headless Chicken (April 20, 1945 – March 17, 1947), also known as Miracle Mike, was a Wyandotte chicken that lived for 18 months after his head had been cut off.

One fine day on September 10, 1945 as farmer Lloyd Olsen was about to prepare supper for his mother-in-law, he chose a five and a half month old cockerel named Mike. So he beheaded the chicken. But Mike didn’t die.

Mike ran like a chicken who lost his head, but instead of dying, recovered, and was up and walking around. He actually carried on like nothing happened. He was balancing on a perch like a normal chicken. He attempted to preen, peck for food, and even crow; all this without a head. Farmer Olsen was amazed to say the least and decided to take care of Mike full time.

Mike was given a food mixture and water directly into the esophagus via eyedropper and was also given tiny bits of corn which farmer Olsen carefully fingered down Mike’s throat. When word got out, his entire community of Fruita, Colorado and even the entire United States wanted to have a peek at Mike. Mike and farmer Olsen enjoyed some success, touring the country and being featured and photographed by various newspapers and magazines.Mike the Headless Chicken Mike the Headless Chicken

But why didn’t Mike die? Well Mike one very lucky chicken. As the axe fell, it removed most of Mike’s head; but luckily most of his brain stem remained intact. To add to this it also missed Mike’s jugular vein, and a clot developed which stopped him from bleeding to death.

Sadly all this had to come to an end. On one fateful night in March 1947, Miracle Mike breathed his last

Lost Stone Age Tribe Discovered Deep In The Amazon Forest

Working with BBC, for the first time ever, we get to take a look at the actual tribe. The Amazon holds many secrets; but every now and then, a plant or maybe an animal is discovered from deep within it. But very rarely do we hear of the discovery of a tribe of humans lost to the world, hidden in the jungle’s depths. It just so happens that one such tribe has managed to survive for thousands of years unchanged, uninfluenced by modern civilization.

Filmed using powerful zoom lenses a kilometer away in the air, we finally get a glimpse of their daily lives. Their tribe exhibits a stone age culture with their simple tools and weapons; clubs, spears, and bows. The men cover their bodies with red body paint extracted from seeds from the annatto tree. Their shelter, huts made of leaves and wood are surrounded by gardens of manioc, bananas and papaya. A simple tribe living a simple life.

Jose Carlos Morales, working for Brazil’s Indian Affairs Department was appointed to study this remote tribe. The tribe, living near one of Brazil’s most remote rivers in the densest parts of the forest, are one of the last uncontacted tribes left on Earth. Unable to directly contact the tribe, Morales studied them from afar, on a small airplane.Lost Stone Age Tribe Discovered Deep In The Amazon Forest

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE: MIAGAO CHURCH

Popularly known as the Miagao Church, Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church is a world heritage site found in the province of Miagao, Iloilo. This Roman Catholic Parish Church is part of the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites along side with San Agustin Church of Manila; Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion Church of Ilocos Sur; and San Agustin Church of Ilocos Norte.

How did I got there?
Well, it is part of our Ilo Ilo city tour. Our group composed of 12 heads rented out a van for 2,900 and a visit to Miagao Church is part of that itinerary.

Side view of the church

Despite being big and popular, the interior design of this church remains simple. It is enormously big and has elaborately-decorated facade and walls. The wall carvings in front of the church is such a work of art which is truly captivating.

Those intricate design of Miagao Church...

You can clearly see that the people of Miagao really put a great effort to preserve the church. Miagao Church has the typical set up of a catholic church. There's an alter in front, long benches with kneeling pad, and has wall fans on both sides. But what makes it stand-out among others is how spacious and humble it is inside. They do not over-do the interior design of Miagao Church. There were actually no design on its long ceiling except for its plain chandeliers. The fanciest thing I saw inside is its alter. Nothing more, nothing less.

Simply captivating and a timeless classic

Miagao Church is truly a world heritage site. It was built hundreds of years ago and survived through ages. This was the last site we visited before we went back to Manila and I am proud to say that we've saved the best for last. The long travel is worth it so do not forget to visit this site when in Iloilo!

Video: Hungry lions attack the wildebeest between touring cars

Any wild animal enthusiast must have watched animals such as lions, leopard and cheetah in the wild on television. One might do this but all the while they might be longing for the one opportunity when they will be able to embark on an African safari and watch for themselves the joy and intrigue involving a wild animal fight.

Embarking on such as safari demands that one should get the best video camera for wildlife filming. With such a camera one can easily be able to catch the lion ambush at a wildebeest crossing. Through the eye of the camera, one can see the hunger that is in the lion, the patience they take in selecting their prey, their agility as they pounce on the hopeless wildebeest. The lioness seems to be less adventurous by going for smaller prey. It makes up for its lack of ferocity in going for the larger wildebeest by killing multiple animals.

The lion on the other hand, the king of the savanna is mercurial in it attack. Without warning, it swiftly pounces on a large wildebeest’s neck, catching it off guard and wrestling it to the ground. Taking this animal fight video right from the safety of your car beats watching a wildlife video in a living room a thousand miles from where the actual action is taking place. Watching this lion ambush can actually drive one to get on the first plane to Africa for an African safari.

WORLD'S BIGGEST SNAKE FOUND ON EARTH !

Could this be the world’s largest snake? Just check out the head on that thing!

A video has recently made the rounds of the internet showing what could possibly be the largest snake ever caught. Sad thing is, it’s dead. Although I doubt they could have captured the thing alive. The snake appears to be a Green Anaconda which are among the largest snakes in the world.
The video shows the gigantic snake lying on a flatbed truck bound by a couple leather belts and large chains. The snake is so huge they had to bend the thing just so it could fit; and this was no small truck.

The footage goes from the snake’s head, down across its immense body to its tail then back again to the head where we get a close-up of its massive mug. Its head is so wide that it easily measures more than a foot across.

Green anacondas are among the largest snakes in the world and are also the heaviest. They can normally be found in the swamps, marshes, and rivers of South America. Unlike most other snakes, Anacondas are semi-aquatic, preferring to live and hunt on water where they prey on large animals like deer, capybaras, caimans and even jaguars.
